Death of Another Pioneer
After an illness of about three years, due principally to the breaking down from old age, Mrs. Emily Montgomery, widow of the late J. H. Montgomery, passed to her last rest on Saturday the 13th inst., at about eight o’clock in the morning. Mrs. Montgomery, maiden name was Emily Biggs, and was born June 25th, 1817{s?} in Lodi, Seneca county, N.Y. She was married to J. H. Montgomery at the age of twenty-two and came west with him in 1844. For twenty years they resided at Aurora, Ill., coming to Decorah in May, 1864, to make their home. Mr. Montgomery died in February 1892.
At the age of seventeen Mrs. Montgobery{sp} united with the Methodist church and for seventy-one years maintained her loyalty to that faith and denomination by a continuous membership. In her earlier years she was active in the social interests of our community but as age crept over her she was compelled to relinquish these pleasures and at the last became one of the shut in class. As an old resident she gained a large circle of acquaintances and friends, who, while they sympathize with the family will cherish the memory of the deceased as a good friend, a kind neighbor and an earnest Christian woman.
Mrs. Montgomery is survived by three children—M. H. Montgomery and Mrs. Anna M. Williams of Decorah, and Mrs. R. F. Gibson of Los Angeles, Cal.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock, Rev. E. G. Hunt officiating.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone photo in Phelps Cemetery shows her year of birth as 1818.
