Nesvik, Berner Christian 1892 - 1973

Berner C. Nesvik, a lifelong resident of Ossian vicinity, died suddenly Monday morning, Nov. 19 at his home.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Stavanger Lutheran Church, the Rev. A. Duane Manson officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Mrs. Glen Remmen of Decorah served as organist. Military rites were conducted by the Brockman-Hammersland Post No. 503.
The following nephews served as pallbearers: Alan Nesvik, James Nesvik, Richard Nesvik, Jerome Meyer, Clarion Hanson and Donald Baade. Honorary pallbearers were the following members of V.F.W. Helof Holm Post no. 1977 Decorah: Ken Sacquitne, Carl Moe, Stan Erickson, Ron Vick, Art Finholt, Harry Grindeland, George Bidne and Jesse Wepler.
Berner Christian Nesvik was born near Ossian July 2, 1892, a son of John and Christina Nesvik. He was baptized and confirmed in Stavanger Lutheran Church were he remained a lifelong member. He obtained an education by attending the local school near his home.
On Feb. 22, 1918 he enlisted in the U.S. army where he served in the 43 Co. 20 Engrs. in France until the end of World War I, returning home July, 1920.
On Aug. 27, 1924 he was united in marriage to Mabel Johnson by the Rev. Kr. Kvamme in the Ossian Lutheran Church. They established their home on a farm south of Ossian where they lived until 1967 when retiring to live in Ossian.
He was for many years treasurer of School District 6; also served on Decorah Financial Board; served as church trustee and at present was treasurer of Stavanger Cemetery organization; a 50 year member of American Legion Post 503 and a continuous member of VFW Post 1977 since 1932.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel, one sister, Melvina (Mrs. Werner Meyer) and two brothers, Clarence of West Union and Leonard, Kansas City, Mo.
Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister Clara (Mrs. Tom Hanson) and two brothers, Adolph and Melvin.
Relatives and friends attending the funeral from out of town were from Mabel, Minn., Milwaukee, Wis., Omaha, Neb., Luana, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, West Union, Postville, Clermont, Decorah, New Hampton, Calmar, Ridgeway and Council Bluffs.
