Joan Agnes (Bucheit) Schissel was born the youngest child of Alphonse and Olivia (Schneberger) Bucheit on April 21, 1932. She graduated as valedictorian from the De Sales High School in 1949. On May 19, 1952, Joan married Donald Schissel at St Francis De Sales Catholic Church, in Ossian, IA. While raising their ten children, she worked with Donny running their business, Don’s Repair. Later they provided daycare for many of their grandchildren. She maintained multiple gardens each summer, enjoyed fishing and boating on the Mississippi River with family and friends, along with motorcycle riding, playing cards, and numerous bus trips across the country with Donny. Her love of crocheting kept her busy many evenings, providing afghans and doilies to share. Everyone looked forward to her delicious apple strudel, and her famous T-ring in lieu of a Christmas card. Grandma Joan was very proud of being the #1 GrandPad user, which led to her recent celebrity status in their commercial and her memorable catch phrase “When you’re alone, you’re not alone. All you have to do is push a few buttons, and everyone is there!”
