Monte Martin age 69, of Ossian, Iowa died on Friday, July 23, 2021 at Gunderson Health Systems in La Crosse, WI.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church at 402 East Main St. in Ossian, IA with Rev. Robert Gross presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Monte Edward Martin was born December 4, 1951 in Iowa City, Iowa. He grew up in Calmar, where he would graduate from South Winneshiek High School in 1970. Following high school, Monte went to Area 1 in Calmar to become an electrician. Monte married Jean Johnson on May 11, 1974 at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Three sons were born to this union; Benjamin, Andrew, and Thomas. Monte started his career working for Penrod Electric and Refrigeration, he returned to Calmar to work at Faldet Appliance and Nor Eg. Monte finished his work career at Cam Car in Decorah.
He played in two local bands, “The Country Playboys” and “Shirley and her Concertina”. He also would fill in if needed in other local bands. Monte enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking, spending time with his grandchildren, eating ice cream, and cruising the roads of Northeast Iowa. He was an avid sports fan, regularly cheering on any San Francisco team and also the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Monte is survived by his wife: Jean (Johnson) Martin, Ossian, IA. Children: Benjamin Martin, Castalia, IA, Andrew Martin, Minneapolis, MN, and Thomas Martin, Cedar Falls, IA. Grandchildren: Shaylan Martin, Morgan Martin, MiKenna Martin, Maran Martin, Mackenzie Martin, Trinity Martin, and Dacen Heuer. Great-grandchild: Aiden Headington. Sisters: Lois Rausch, Ft. Atkinson, IA and Mary Lou Huber, San Jose, CA. Brothers-in-law: Duke Hinker, Cedar Rapids, IA and David (Brenda) Johnson, Ossian, IA. Sisters-in-law: Martha Martin, San Jose, CA, Vera Martin, Chesnee, SC, Pat Martin, Rochester, MN, Sharon (David) Mashek, Spillville, IA, Mary Lou (Ray) Gleason, Cedar Rapids, IA, Linda (Dennis) Hageman, Ossian, IA, Denise (Randy) Henning, Elgin, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Veston and Gladys Martin. Brothers: Ray, Richard, Harold “Swede”, John, and Robert. Sister: Janet Hinker. Father and Mother-in-law: Palmer and Florence Johnson. Sisters-in-law: Shirley (Robert) Sadler and a sister-in-law in infancy. Brothers-in-law: Ray Rausch, Joe Huber and Mark Johnson.
