Viola “Vi” Palmer age 103, from Decorah, IA passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah, IA. With Rev. Robert Gross presiding. Burial will be in the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. Everyone attending is asked to please wear a mask.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday morning.

Viola Louise “Vi” Palmer was born on July 12, 1917, the daughter of William and Katherine (Busch) Tieskotter, at home on Clay Hill, north of Decorah. Vi attended rural country school on Clay Hill and helped neighboring families. At the age of seventeen she was making pies to be sold at Gross’ Station, where the bus stopped. She was united in marriage to David Clair Palmer on June 15, 1938, at the parsonage of St. Benedict Catholic Church, and together they raised nine children. Vi was a busy homemaker and also worked at the Springer Hotel doing cooking and baking. Vi worked for Ronnie’s Café and then later operated Vi’s Café for eight years in Decorah with her husband Clair. She was well known for her cooking skills and made wonderful meals. Vi moved into Decorah in 1973. She enjoyed dancing, quilting, embroidering, sewing, and playing cards. Vi was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and St. Marie’s Circle, and a former member of the Quilters Guild.

Vi is survived by her seven children: Mary (Paul) Farley, Waukon, IA; Sharon Hageman, Decorah, IA; Daryl (Dorothy) Palmer, East Olympia, WA; Linda (Jerry) Johnson, Decorah, IA; Jim (Alice) Palmer, Castalia, IA; Harlan (Diane) Palmer, Decorah, IA; and Kevin (Sharon Phinney)Palmer, Shelton,WA, along with twenty-five grandchildren, many great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Vi was preceded in death by her parents: William and Katherine (Busch) Tieskotter. Her husband: Clair Palmer on Dec. 31, 1990. One son: David Palmer in 1978. Daughter: Lois Jean Matter in 2020. Two sons-in-law: Roman Hageman in 2013 and Richard Matter in 2019. One granddaughter: Jennifer Hageman. One great grandson: Jonah Hageman. Two brothers: Irvin (Margorie) Tieskotter and Eddie (Orletta) Tieskotter. Two sisters: Hilda (Elmer) Rosendahl and Rose (Olger) Rosendahl. Brothers in Law Edward Palmer, Burdette Palmer and his wife Ilene. Sister-in-law Nina Gottschalk and her husband Willis and their daughter Edith Krugel and several nieces and nephews. Vi’s father-in-law and mother-in-law: Henry and Florence Palmer.
