Virginia Marilyn (Hovey) Sacquitne was born November 28, 1929 in Madison Township, near Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Clara (Syverson) Hovey. Virginia attended country school in Madison Township and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1948. She worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell in Decorah.

Virginia was united in marriage to Obert Donald Sacquitne on August 27, 1949 at Decorah Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with five children: Virlis, Donald, Karen, David and Marybeth.

Obert and Virginia started farming west of Decorah in 1949. In 1953, they moved to a farm north of Decorah, near Burr Oak, where they farmed for several years. The whole family helped with the farm and dairy operation. Virginia had a huge garden and canned many vegetables, fruits, and made jams. She made sure her family had plenty to eat. Obert and Virginia welcomed others to their farm, and they were often fed a meal or homemade goodies. Virginia was an excellent cook, and she taught her daughters how to make lefse and now her granddaughters make it too. Obert and Virginia retired in 1992 and they moved to Decorah. She was a very active member of Decorah Lutheran Church, where she served on several committees, including being the funeral luncheon coordinator for years, was active in church circles and Ladies aid. For over 40 years she helped with the Nordic Fest Dinner, helping to make the homemade Rommegrot every year. Her faith was strong and an important part of her life.

Virginia and Obert enjoyed going to dances, playing cards, fishing, traveling and stock car racing. She really enjoyed watching the grandchildren grow up and pursue their education goals and enjoyed all of her great-grandchildren.

Virginia became a resident of Wellington Place in Decorah in August 2019.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Obert on December 26, 2012; a daughter, Virlis McClintock on April 4, 2002; a son, Orlando Donald Sacquitne on May 29, 2010; and one sister, Colleen Askelson.

Virginia is survived by two daughters: Karen (Larry) Steffens of Cedar Falls, IA and Marybeth (Lyle Jr.) Cary of Decorah; one son, David (Julie) Sacquitne of Decorah; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren: one sister, Martha Casterton of Decorah; son-in-law, LeRoy (Deanna) McClintock of Decorah; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago St., Decorah, IA 52101.
