Calmar, Iowa. Jan. 16th, 1895.
George Swehla, eldest son of J. W. Swehla, of this place, while out hunting; on the 13th inst. was accidentally shot and killed. Young Swehla had a double-barrelled, muzzle-loading shot gun, and had discharged one barrel at a squirrel, and it appears that while he was re-loading this barrel, the hammer of the other barrel was inadvertently left cocked and the trigger in some manner came in contact with something that released the hammer, discharging the contents of the gun into the boy’s head with deadly effect, and he expired in a couple of hours afterwards. George was a bright and promising youth of 16 years, and his parents are prostrated with grief over his sad and tragic end. Several other lads were present when young Swehla was shot. This is one of the saddest and most shocking accidents that ever occurred in this community, and the bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their great loss. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church here yesterday, Rev. Father Kromolis officiating. The interment took place in the Catholic cemetery near by.Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in St. Aloysius Cemetery shows the name spelled Swella and it also shows he was born Aug. 16, 1878.
