IN MEMORIAM.
In Ossian, Iowa, December 22, 1894, Mrs. Mary Carter, aged, 76 years, 5 months and 13 days.
Mary Jackson, was born in Philadelphia. Pa., July 9, 1818. Her parents on her mother's side were of Scottish, and her father’s side of English origin. She was married in the city of Philadelphia, May 5, 1842, to Maholen{sic} Carter, a Quaker. Some time after, they emigrated to Ohio, lived in Illinois, and, soon after, moved to the city of her birth, where they resided until the fore part of the year 1856, when they came to Iowa, and settled on a farm in Bloomfield township, Winneshiek county, July 4, 1856.
As the issue of this marriage, two children were born, Memmon J. and William Warren, both of whom are married and engaged in business in Ossian, April 10,1869, her husband died and the surviving members of the family lived on the old homestead until the spring of 1874, After the marriage of Memmon J., in April. 1878, deceased made her home with him where she lived up to the time of her death. .
In her younger days she was blessed with unusual good health, but in after years her health became impaired, the last twenty-five years, an invalid most of the time during the fifteen years preceding her death, For several years after nettling in Iowa she treated many in sickness according to the Homopathic system, and many readers of these lines were attended by her in the diseases incident to early childhood.
In her early life she joined the M. E. church, later affilliating with the Baptists, taking letters from these churches when removals occurred. A kind woman, an affectionate mother, possessed with a firmness of character worthy of emulation, she died as she had lived, having the respect of all who knew her.
The funeral was held from the home, December 24, 1894, in Ossian, the Rev. O. W. Rose officiating, her remains being interred in the Centenial cemetery, followed by old neighbors and friends, to pay their last tribute of respect to a worthy woman.—
