THROWN FROM A HORSE.
Jacob Segmiller, Jr., Died from a Fall on a Cement Sidewalk.
Saturday morning last Jacob Segmiller, Jr., was thrown from the back of a horse he was trying, and as a result of his fall he died shortly after noon, Sunday. The circumstances, as we are told them, are as follows: The accident occurred near the Cadwell building, on Main street. The horse was one which the Segmiller brothers purchased from Owen Rooney, to go toward filling a car for the eastern market. It is customary to try a horse’s wind before accepting him, and Mr. Segmiller was on the animal’s back for that purpose, although he had been warned not to get on, as the horse was not broken to ride. Suddenly the horse kicked, throwing his rider into the air, who, when he came down, struck his head and shoulders upon the cement sidewalk with such force that all medical aid was of no avail. Segmiller was taken to his brother’s home on East Main street, where he breathed his last. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning, the remains being taken to Locust for burial.
Mr. Segmiller was born and brought up in this county. For several years he has resided in Decorah, being connected with his brother in buying and selling horses and conducting a feed stable. He was quiet and unpretentious, but enjoyed a large circle of acquaintances who had learned to respect him as an honest and upright young man.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows the name spelled Seegmiller and that he was born Jan. 10, 1868 and died July 4, 1896. He is buried in the Locust Lane Cemetery.
