Lewis L. Cooke.

Another Pioneer was laid away for his final rest last Sunday. Lewis L. Cooke was born June 16th, 1808, and died August 30th, 1893, aged 85 years, 2 months and 14 days. For forty years he had lived in this county. Coming to this county in 1853, he first purchased a farm in Glenwood township. Subsequently he bought what was known as the Relf farm in Madison township. By industry and economy he acquired a competence, and twelve years ago he came into Decorah to take the rest he had fairly earned. Here he literally enjoyed a genial old age. Most kindly will be the recollections of him, as for three dozen years he moved among us, always exhibiting a placid temper, speaking the kindly word of cheer, and manifesting the sunny disposition of one who having faithfully performed his duty as a citizen and a father, could cheerfully wait for the summons which sooner or later comes to all. In 1844 Mr. Cooke married Caroline M. Eastwood, who preceded him to the spirit land some ten years ago. Nine children were the fruit of this union, all of whom survive him. Funeral services were held on Sunday last, Rev. W.F. Pitner officiating.
