Lorna E. Thune, 87, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Private family funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial will be at Big Canoe Cemetery in rural Decorah, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church Radio Ministry at PO Box 403, Waukon, IA 52172 or Good Samaritan Society at 21 East Main Street, Waukon, IA 52172. Cards may be sent to Chester Thune at 25 1st Street SE, Waukon, IA 52172. Martin – Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.

Lorna Elaine Thune was born on May 12, 1933, in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Edgar and Lenora (Tangen) Nelson. She was baptized at the Iowa River Lutheran Church in rural Waukon and was confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, IA. Lorna attended country schools in Hanover and Pleasant Townships and graduated from Decorah High School in 1951. On October 1, 1952, she married Chester S. Thune at Big Canoe Lutheran Church. They shared 68 years together and were blessed with five daughters. Lorna and Chester farmed the Thune family farm near Highlandville for several years before moving into Waukon in 1969.

In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, Lorna worked at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Allamakee Community Schools, and did daycare in her home. After retiring, she enjoyed being a volunteer grandmother at West Elementary as well as volunteering at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Lorna was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was active in ladies circle. Her greatest joy was her family and she treasured every moment she spent with them.

Survivors include her husband Chester of Waukon; her five daughters: Julie (Dayl) Inglett of Ames, IA, Renee (Michael) Smock of Decorah, IA, Shelly (Rick) Boatwright of Ankeny, IA, Debra (Edward) Arp of Cumming, IA, and Jodi (Joseph) Burke of West Des Moines, IA; 13 grandchildren: Patrick (Erika) Inglett, Nicholas Inglett, Stephanie (Pat) Erb, Justin (Deanna) Smock, Erin (Juan) del Cid, Corey (Erin) Smock, Colin (Celia) Boatwright, Lisa (Josh) Funk, Ashley (Derek) Rehm, Lindsey (Alex) Hartogh, Brandon Arp, and Hannah and Ellie Burke; 14 great-grandchildren: Memphis, Greyson, and Malachi Inglett, Hunter and Brooklyn Erb, Ely, Owen, and Isaac Smock, Avery and Abigail del Cid, Emmitt Smock, Leah and Jaxon Funk, and Russell Rehm; brother-in-law Darrel Stoen; sister-in-law Helen Thune; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister Carol Stoen; father and mother-in-law Alvin and Julia Thune; sister-in-law Esther (Stanley) Griebel; brother-in-law Dean Thune; and a nephew Eric Thune.

Honorary casketbearers are Lorna's friends at Evergreen Court. Casketbearers are Lorna's grandchildren.
