Donald O. Johnson, age 88, of Decorah, IA, died Thursday evening, January 21, 2021 at Wellington Place in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Peter Kowitz officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah with Military Honors.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, one hour before the service, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Donald Orville Johnson was born on September 20, 1932 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Ole and Gena (Bringsjord) Johnson, the youngest of their seven children. He attended Decorah schools and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1951. Don served in the U.S. Navy.

Don was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Snitker on January 25, 1964 in Prosper, MN. They were blessed with one daughter, Debra.

He owned and operated the Silver Dollar bar in Decorah for many years. They were members of Decorah Lutheran Church and Don was a member of Helof Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977. He liked to fish and was a big fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Cubs. Shirley was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and Don was a very loving and dedicated caregiver to her for 12 years, the first four in their home and then the last eight years at Aase Haugen Home. He went to see her and help her at Aase Haugen every single day for those eight years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Shirley on March 24, 2014; five sisters: Evelyn Pierce, Helen Enyart, Frances Johnson, Thelma Pahl and Gladys Herold; and one brother Merlyn Johnson.

Don is survived by one daughter, Debra (Charlie) Coffey of Decorah; three grandsons and one great-grandson: Ryan (Colleen) Coffey, and their son Cassius, of Minneapolis, MN, Joseph Coffey and Matthew Coffey of Decorah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
