THE REAPER BUSY
Three Sudden Deaths from Appoplexy in as many days.
THREE COMMUNITIES SHOCKED
Decorah, Freeport and Burr Oak visited without warning and Old Residents taken.
FRIDOLIN REUM.
This community was shocked Monday morning to learn that at the midnight hour Mr. Fridolin Reum, one of our oldest citizens had died after a brief illness. He was about his shop and in his usual health on Monday. In the evening he started to go to the home of N. E. Brekke to see Mr. B. on business. When he had proceeded as far as J. C. Hexom’s store he became aware of an unusual sensation in his breast which made him so faint that he was compelled to sit down upon a box standing in front of the store. Here he remained for some time in anticipation of returning strength. As soon as possible he started back and only reached his home after much difficulty. A physician was summoned immediately and while he seemed to be in a dangerous condition, he became easier after a time. Toward twelve o’clock, however, he grew rapidly worse and though medical assistance was again called it was impossible to do anything for him. He passed away shortly before twelve o’clock. Pulmonary appoploxy was the ascribed cause.
Mr. Reum was born in Frauenbritungen, Germany, Jan. 26th, 1838, and came to America in 1858, stopping at Baltimore. Later he engaged in business at Cincinnati, and when the war came in 1860 he was among the first to respond to the call for volunteers, enlisting in the 10th Ohio Infantry and serving with the army of the Cumberland until honorably discharged in 1864. After the war he came west and engaged in the meat market business at Beloit, Wis., but remained only a short time. Early in 1865 he visited Decorah and decided to permanently locate here. Returning to Beloit he was married to Clara Winna Kohlz in July, 1866 and immediately moved to Decorah with his young bride. Here their home has since been.
Having been engaged in the meat market business in Decorah for over thirty years, Mr. Reum had acquired an acquaintance and friendship which extended to all parts of the county. Wherever he was known he was honored for many good qualities, and scores upon scores of friends join in condolence with the family in the untimely death of a loving and kind husband and father. The deceased leaves a widow, three sons and two daughters to mourn him.
The funeral services will he hold at Unity church on Friday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. A. G. Wilson officiating.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows his name spelled Friedolin and that he is buried in Phelps Cemetery. His gravestone shows he died in 1839.
