PIONEERS PASSING AWAY.
PETER SAMPSON, a resident of this county since 1852, died at his home in Pleasant township on Saturday morning, the 16th, aged 77 years, 6 months and 3 days.
Mr. Sampson was born in Voss, Norway, and came to this country in 1849. After a year spent in Chicago, he removed to Beloit, Wis., where he lived until the summer of 1852, when he came to Iowa, and located in Decorah. For about ten years he followed his trade of shoemaker, to which he added harness-making. While the land office was here he secured some land in Pleasant township, to which he retired, and where he has lived for about thirty-five years. Mr. S. married Sigrid Nordheim, before coming to the United States, and ten children blessed their union, seven of whom, with the mother, survive him. For the last dozen years of his life he was afflicted with blindness, and mingled but little with his fellows. He was a man of more than usual intelligence, and was, in his active years, interested in all matters of general importance, especially those of the church of which he was a devoted member.Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery shows he was born Jan. 13, 1821 and that he died July 15, 1898.
