Lois Matter, age 73, of Frankville, IA, died on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will at held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA with Rev. Peter Kowitz presiding. Burial will be held in the Locust Cemetery, rural Decorah.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the church. Everyone attending is asked to please wear a mask.

Lois Jean (Palmer) Matter was born on January 7, 1947 in Freeport, Winneshiek County, Iowa to David Clair and Viola Louis (Tieskotter) Palmer. Her grandparents were Henry Raymond and Florence (Schroeder) Palmer and William Bernard and Katherine (Busch) Tieskotter. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa. Lois attended one-room rural school first in Freeport, Locust and later in Pleasant Township. She was in the first graduating class of the Thomas Roberts High School in Decorah in 1965. Lois married Richard John Matter on March 24, 1966 at the Decorah Lutheran Church and together they had Lincoln, Lance and Lynette. Together they farmed and raised registered Holsteins on their farm near Frankville. While helping Richard on the farm, she worked various jobs at the local Root Beer stand, Ben Franklin and Living good Supper Club in Frankville. She worked at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah for 27 years as a housekeeper, laundry aide, and dietary aide. She was instrumental in bringing the UAW union to the employees of Aase Haugen. She served as Union Steward for over 10 years. Lois was an active participant in the Iowa Holstein Association, Junior Holstein Association, Decorah FFA Alumni, and served as the 4-H leader for the Bonnie Bluebirdettes and Frankville Farmhands. She was also involved in the Northeast Iowa Quilting Guild where she served on various committees along with being the President of the Guild for several years. During her cancer battle, she also loved binding quilts for the Quilts of Valor organization. Lois was a kind hearted person who loved to make quilts for her co-workers and friends. She never allowed for anyone to leave her house hungry and always fed them. She made sure she supplied her nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters with ample Chocolate Chip Cookies and Homemade Bread. She was mom to many of her children’s friends. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was always one to organize the family get-togethers

Lois is survived by her three children: Lincoln of Postville, Lance (Lori) of Cresco, and Lynette (Joshua Rose) of Postville. Grandchildren: Erik and Leif Matter, Anna (Savon) Love, Tristan and Kipling Rose. Mother: Viola Palmer, Decorah. Sisters: Mary (Paul) Farley of Waukon, Sharon Hageman of Waukon, Linda (Gerald) Johnson of Decorah. Four brothers: Daryl (Dorothy) Palmer of East Olympia, WA, James Sr. (Alice) Palmer of rural Castalia, Harlan (Diane) Palmer of Burr Oak, Iowa and Kevin (Sharon Phinney) Palmer of Shelton, WA and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband: Richard on April 29, 2019. Her father: Clair Palmer. Brother: David Edward Palmer. Her in-Laws: Elmer and Ruth Matter. Brother-in-Law: Roman Hageman.
