Elaine C. (Meyer) Munkel, age 94, of Decorah, IA, died on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, IA. Her Catholic faith was important to her; she is now reunited with her husband, Lawrence E. Munkel and all her loved ones who predeceased her.

A private family inurnment will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Decorah in 2021.

Elaine was born March 11, 1926 near Lime Springs, Iowa to John J. Meyer and Josephine (Bouska) Meyer. She attended the Lime Springs public schools and graduated from Lime Springs High School where she played on the women’s basketball team. After graduation, she taught at a country school.

Elaine was married to Lawrence E. Munkel on December 30, 1947 at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Chester, Iowa. They were the first couple to be married at St. Stephens. The new church had just been built by Lawrence and his brothers. They were blessed with five children: Kenneth, Kathleen, Marie, Steven and Robert.

They moved to Decorah in 1954 where Lawrence established a construction firm and Elaine worked as the bookkeeper for Munkel Construction until retiring in 1985.

Elaine belonged to a bridge club and played golf for many years but her true passion was gardening. She loved to bake, and her family enjoyed her Saturday morning cinnamon rolls and kolaches. Elaine also enjoyed traveling and visited many places around the world.

Elaine is survived by four children: Ken (Diane) Munkel of Des Moines, IA, Kathleen (Denny) McGinn of Afton, MN, Marie (Michael) Morrison of Palm Harbor, FL and Steve (Julie) Munkel of Decorah, IA; seven grandchildren: Christopher Bracken (Paige Darrigo), Craig Bracken (Lynsey), Colin and Maiti McGinn, Erica Sommers (Matt), Olivia Munkel and Laura Munkel; and five great grandchildren: Sadie and Sydney Bracken (Christopher), Noah and Colt Bracken (Craig), and Mia Sommers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
