THE SILENT REAPER.
Mrs. J. C. STRONG.
Early Monday morning a telegraphic message brought the intelligence to her Decorah relatives that Mrs. Jacob C. Strong died the evening previous at their family home in Minneapolis.
Abbie Carver Amy was born in Rochester, Vt., Nov. 13th, l835. While yet a child the family moved to Kirtland, Ohio, and later to Cleveland, where she grew to womanhood. There she married J. C. Strong Sept. 3d, 1856. With him she removed to Cataraugus county, N.Y. where they resided for two years. Coming west in the fall of 1858 they made their home at Fort Atkinson for a time and then moved to Decorah, where they lived until three years ago. Since that time Minneapolis has been their home. Three children were born to them: Harry, of Minneapolis, Carver, of Chicago, and Robert Lincoln, whose remains lie in Decorah cemetery.
Mrs. Strong was a great lover of her home. It was there that her friends sought her, and knew her as a devoted wife and mother. When death left her eldest son with three motherless children she went to him and has indeed been mother as well as grandmother to them. In religious belief she was a Unitarian. A fondness for literature lead her naturally into becoming a constant student of all that was good in scientific as well as the current topics of the day. For some time past she had experienced not a little trouble with her heart and had failed gradually. Sunday evening soon after preparing for the night, the summons which all will some day answer came to her and she passed away in a few moments.
The funeral service was held at the home in Minneapolis Tuesday afternoon, the remains were brought to Decorah last evening, and this afternoon are laid at rest beside those of her infant son.
Two sisters and one brother, Mrs. J. A. McKinney and C. W. Amy, of Decorah, and Mrs. J. M. Williams, of Syracuse, Neb., besides her husband and two sons, survive her.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her name as Abba Carver “Abby”. She is buried in Phelps Cemetery.
