Harlan was born on June 7, 1928 to Theodore and Myrtle (Sharp) Vine. Harlan didn’t graduate High School, but stayed home to help with the farm. He also hired himself out to the neighbors as a farm hand. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. It was there he obtained his G.E.D. Although he never received his G.E.D. certificate due to state regulations, he was very proud when state regulations allowed him to finally receive it on November 9, 2006.

Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Harlan moved to Decorah and was employed by the Decorah Newspaper helping in many departments there, but mainly as the printing press operator. During his time in Decorah, he met and married JoAnn Thompson on July 27, 1952 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. T.H. Hoff. To this union two children were born, Lowell and Duane.

Following his time at the Decorah Newspaper, he worked ground maintenance for many, many years for Luther College.

He enjoyed working with wood, making and constructing all kinds of odds and ends. He also had an interest in history, especially his family history. He enjoyed gardening and growing anything he had an interest in. Harlan loved to bake as well. He would bake odd recipes that he could dream up, even made a sauerkraut cake.

He was a member and past Commander of the V.F.W. in Decorah. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, serving as past Noble Grand.

Harlan also loved a good chuckle. He always had a short joke or saying that he would be glad to share and laugh along with. One of his favorite’s was an Ole and Lena joke. He would often also share stories about how things used to be back in the old days.

Harlan is survived by his son Duane (friend Nadine) Vine of Decorah, Iowa, daughter-in-law, Debbie Garvin of Ankeny, Iowa, a granddaughter Angie (Lee) Lindstrom of Cresco, Iowa, grandson Matt Vine of Calmar, Iowa, and two great grandchildren, Wyatt & Zoey Lindstrom. He is also survived by brothers Carlton, Eldon (Kathy), Alvin, Robert (Ruby), sister-in-law Vivian, several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son Lowell, a brother Darrell, a sister Marilyn Kallevang, two sisters-in-law, Donna and Mavis, and a brother-in-law Durwin Kallevang.
