Gordon Herbert Pfister, age 90 years and 11 months, died of heart failure, on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with Rev. Melissa Bills officiating. Inurnment will be in Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, one hour before the service, at Fjelstul Funeral Home.

As mandated, social distancing and face masks or shields are required to attend.

Gordon was born October 24, 1929 in the Smith Memorial Hospital in Decorah, the son of Alwin & Caroline (Burmeister) Pfister. He was the youngest of seven children. He was baptized the same day because he was not expected to survive. Gordon was confirmed October 31, 1944 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust and graduated from Decorah High School in 1948.

Gordon was united in marriage to Barbara Borseth on July 14, 1956 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. This union was blessed with 2 daughters, Karen and Doris.

Gordon worked for Iowa DOT for 42 years, sang with Luren Men’s Singing Society, and taught square dancing for New Minowa Squares. He and Barb traveled most of the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Norway, Germany & Austria. He was a kind, gentle man who enjoyed playing cards and making people happy. He and Barbara retired to Arkansas in 1990 and were proud to be charter members of Garvin Woodland Gardens. They returned to Iowa in 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Alwin & Caroline (Burmeister) Pfister; 4 brothers and their wives: Walter (Myrtle Headington) Pfister, Lester (Alma Osmundson) Pfister, George (Anna Cunningham) Pfister, Norman (Betty Henningson) Pfister; 2 sisters and their husbands, Elsie (Sanford) Osmundson and Luella (George) Young.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Borseth); daughters, Karen Parhizi, of Decorah, Doris Pfister of Calmar; 7 grandchildren: Brianna (Bill) Thomas, Alan (Krystal) Lingbeck, Stephanie (Daniel) Dahlstrom, Melissa (Shane) Pearson, Brian (Aunna) Wickham, Kevin (Megan) Wickham, AJ Wickham; 8 great-grandchildren: Bella, Lilyanna, Lilly, Naomi, Rachel, Joshua, Eleanor, Audrey; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
