Death of Dan Lawrence.
On Thursday last at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. W. R. Kinnaird, in McGregor, Dan Lawrence, an old resident of Decorah, passed away. Mr. Lawrence came to this county in the fifties and for some time lived on the old Michael Womeldorf farm, now owned by Chas. Broghammer. Later he was appointed deputy clerk, serving under the late S. W. Matteson. When the office of county recorder was separated from that of county treasurer he was nominated for that office, but declined it for private reasons. After retiring from the court house the family home remained in Decorah until about nine years ago, when Mrs. Lawrence died. Since then his home has been for the most part in McGregor. Two daughters, Mrs. W. B. Clive, of England, and Mrs. W. R. Kinnaird survive him.
The remains were brought to Decorah for burial, last Saturday. The service was conducted by Rev. M. Willett and was attended by the Masonic lodge of this city, of which order he was a member for many years.

Came west when quite a young man, and spent most of his life In Iowa. He married at the age of 25, Miss Lydia Smith, at Janesville, Wis. The following years he engaged in farming, and later settled in Decorah, Iowa, where he lived up to the time of his wife's death, 1891. Since then he has made his home with his daughter in McGregor, with the exception of one year spent in California, and one with his daughter in England.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Phelps Cemetery looks like he was born July 18, 1823.
