DEATH OF O. M. BARRETT.
Intelligence was received by letter, last week, of the death of Hon. O. M. Barrett, at his home in San Diego, California, on the 1st inst. Full particulars did not arrive until last Saturday. We give the obituary as printed in the San Diego Union of the 2d inst.
In his early life Mr. Barrett lived in Burr Oak, and it is there he married the wife who survives him. She was the daughter of John Waggoner, the builder and first owner of the pioneer hotel. In the War of the Rebellion he enlisted in Co. D, 38th Iowa, and became a lieutenant, possibly a captain—we have not the record at hand. After the war, and when Northwest Iowa began to develope, he moved to Sheldon, where he accumulated property, practiced law and became a national banker. He was always active in politics, and represented the O'Brien county district in both branches of the legislature for ten years. The obituary of the Union is headed “A Brief Illness ends a Long and Useful Career,” and is as follows:—
Judge Orsmond M. Barrett died yesterday morning at his home in this city, aged 64 years. The cause of death was chronic nephritis. Mr. Barrett was taken seriously ill only last Friday, and grew gradually weaker until 9 o'clock yesterday morning, when death resulted. At the Republican primaries held last week he was elected a delegate to the city convention, but one hour before the convention met yesterday morning he closed his earthly career.
Judge Barrett was born in Oswego, N. Y., in 1834. While yet a young man he moved to Iowa, where he served with distinction in the state senate for four terms, and in the assembly for two terms. He practiced law for 30 years. Six years ago he came to this city, spending the first three years at National City, where he became president of the People’s State bank, and the last three years at his home at Twenty- second and K streets in this city. He leaves a widow and six children—four sons, John, Charles, Warner and Fred, and two daughters. Mrs. Nellie Bishop and Miss Jessie Barrett.
The deceased was a member of the G. A. R., the Masonic and K. of P. lodge, and the Loyal Legion of Iowa. He was a man of many noble qualities, and was respected and esteemed by all who knew him. The funeral will be held at the family residence, Twenty-second and K streets, at 10 o’clock to¬morrow morning.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born May 28, 1837{which differs from the above} and died March 1, 1899. He is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in San Diego, CA.
