DEATH OF GEORGE N. HOLWAY.
Particulars of the death of this once well-known citizen of this county, came to us yesterday. The event took place at the home of his second eon, Wm. N. Holway, in Los Angeles, California, on the 27th ult. The day before last Christmas, he had a stroke of paralysis from which he made good recovery, but other complications set in from which death resulted.
Mr. Holway was born in Sandwich, Mass., Sept. 29, 1826, and was therefore in his 73d year. He received a liberal education, and the earlier years of his manhood were spent in teaching. He was engaged in that occupation when he met and married the wife who survives him. In 1853 he came to Iowa, located in Hesper township, and soon become prominent in all public affairs. In 1857 he was elected assessor at the time when one officer did that service for the entire county. In 1860 when the County Supervisor system—or supervisor for each town—came into existence, he was elected to represent Hesper township on the Board. He was elected Chairman. The war of the rebellion came on, and when Capt. Willett’s company was organized and went to war, the Board appropriated $2000 to properly clothe the company. In this action Mr. H. participated, and for it he was “dealt with” by his associates in the Friends meeting at Hesper. They never lost their regard for the manhood of Mr. Holway or doubted his integrity, but it was a violation of peace principles that had to be dealt with.
In 1865, Mr. Holway was elected County Treasurer, and re-elected in 1867, serving four years. In 1873 he was elected County Superintendent, and served one term. In office he was efficient and conscientious. Soon after retiring from official life, his attention was turned to mining in the Black Hills, and later he followed his sons, William N. and Rulif S., to California. E. W. D. Holway, of the Winnesheik County Bank, the eldest of the family, is the only one remaining here.
The funeral services were hold on Thursday, the 2d inst.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA.
