J. H. HAUG DEAD.

Spillville’s Leading Merchant Dies After Short Illness-Funeral Held Tuesday Noon.

Word came to Decorah last Friday morning of the death at a hospital in Milwaukee of J. H. Haug, Spillville’s most prominent merchant and long time citizen. The facts of his death as they come to us are brief. For several years Mr. Haug has at times not been in the best of health, but despite that fact was always able to attend to his business. About a week before his death he became seriously ill with what appeared to be a brain difficulty. He was taken to Milwaukee for treatment and shortly after reaching the hospital lapsed into unconsciousness from which he could not be roused, and death ensued as stated above.

J. H. Haug was born December 4th, 1848, in Switzerland. During his eighteenth year (in 1866) he came to America and to Spillville, where he entered the employ of his uncle, J. J. Haug, as clerk in the latter’s store. In 1871 he acquired an interest in the business and the firm was known as J. J. Haug & Co. until 1876 when J. Meyer joined the younger Haug in purchasing the store. After two years Mr. Haug became the sole proprietor and has continued in active management of the business ever since. Among those who are well informed it is stated that probably no other merchant in the county did a larger business than Mr. Haug. He bought the produce of the farmers for miles around, no matter what they had to offer, and in turn he handled a larger variety of merchandise than can be found in the average store. He was honorable in his dealings and by good business methods amassed a comfortable fortune. Beside his personal business he was interested in the National Bank of Decorah and the Citizens Bank of Ossian.

Mr. Haug was married on October 26, 1875, to Mary Vogler. Six children were born to them,--three daughters and two sons. Two children died in childhood. The surviving members of the family are Bertha, Louise, Pauline and Henry, who, with their mother mourn the loss of one who was ever loyal, loving and watchful for their comfort and welfare. Mr. Haug had many friends throughout the south part of the county, who join in condolence to his family.

The funeral was held Tuesday noon at the home in Spillville.
