Robert D. “Slim” Gilbertson, age 86, of Decorah, Iowa, passed away Sunday morning, July 12, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society in Postville, IA.
Private Family Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 17, 2020 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with Rev. Jim Scaife officiating. Burial will be in the Madison East Cemetery.
Robert Dean “Slim” Gilbertson was born on October 12, 1933 in Decorah, IA, to Alfred and Isabelle (Bakken) Gilbertson. The family lived on a farm west of Decorah in Madison Township. He attended rural school of Madison Township and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1951.
Bob was united in marriage to Charleen Faye “Chuckie” Smock on October 7, 1956 at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah. They were blessed with five children: Linda, Wanda, Kathy, Kevin and Bob.
They farmed together in Madison Township for many years. Bob liked fishing, hunting, watching football and baseball games, and cracking walnuts. He loved attending his grandchildren’s activities, and he also loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears. He was a member of Madison Lutheran Church.
Bob became a resident at Good Samaritan Society in Postville, IA in April 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Charleen “Chuckie” Gilbertson on December 15, 2009; two brothers, Orin and Vernon Gilbertson; and four sisters: Olive Hotvedt, Arline Edde, Margaret Kruchek and Inez Berge.
Bob “Slim” is survived by three daughters: Linda (Don) Holthaus of Ossian, IA, Wanda (Mark) Steffen of Calmar, IA, and Kathy “Gilby” (Lunch) Smith of Decorah; two sons: Kevin (Linda) Gilbertson of Decorah and Bob (Christine) Gilbertson of Marshalltown, IA; 11 grandchildren: Chris Holthaus, Jennifer (Chris “Pup”) Stanbrough, Erin (William) Montoya, Devin (Sam) Gilbertson, Bridget (Jeremy) Lutz, Tyler (Emily) Smith, Casey Smith, Lindsay Smith, Charlie Gilbertson, Kyan Gilbertson and Faye Gilbertson; 5 great-grandchildren with another one due in October; and one sister, Norma Rosendahl of Osage, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
