Mrs. Walter Rathbun—Obituary.
Cresco Republican:—Wealthy Loomis, the subject of this sketch, was born in Litchfield, Bradford county, Penn., Oct. 20, 1822. When about a year old her parents removed to Cataraugus county, New York, Here she grew to womanhood and by habits of industry and thrift laid the foundation for that strength of character which she displayed in so remarkable a degree later in life.
On Jan. 8, 1850, she was united in marriage to Mr. Walter Rathbun at Rockford, III. Soon after her marriage she removed with her husband to Frankville township, Winnesheik county, Io. On what is now known as Washington Prairie the young couple commenced together the path of life. At this time there was but one other settler on the Prairie, and the two families gave the name that this section of country now bears. For more than forty years Mrs. Rathbun lived and worked in the old homestead. During all these pioneer days her home and her heart were open to all that needed help and sympathy. She had eight children, five now living, and three died in infancy.
Mr. Rathburn died July 23, 1897, and soon after this Mrs. Rathbun went to Cresco, Iowa, to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. G. Fish. After a lingering illness of three years, on Sabbath morning, May 13, 1900, “She was not, for God took her." She was taken for burial to the graveyard of Centennial church, near her old home. The remains were accompanied by her children, Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Rathbun and Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Fish. A large concourse of old friends and neighbors assembled at the church to pay their respects to the memory of the departed. The services wore conducted by Rev. O. H. Holmes, pastor of the Congregational church, Cresco.
