MRS. JENS CHRISTOPHER.
Gjertru, wife of the late Jens Christopher, was born in Vang, Valdert, Norway, married in 1836, emigrated with her family to America in 1853, and settled on a farm In Springfield township. In 1867 the family moved to Decorah, which has since been their home.
Deceased was the mother of ten daughters, and two sons. Five daughters had preceded their parents to their heavenly home.
Mrs. Christopher was a devoted wife, tender mother, an energetic, industrious woman. A Christian. She read much and kept herself informed of the progress of the world, but the church, the Bible and books of a religious nature were of the greatest interest to her. She looked well after the ways of her household, but did not neglect her children’s education. She was their principal teacher in the Christian religion. They, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, bless the memory of one who was their loving, sympathizing best friend. Since her husband’s death in 1897 her strength has gradually failed and during the last eight months she was confined to her bed. She was a patient sufferer, longing, however, for permission to join her dear ones in heaven. This permission came to her at one o’clock on the morning of April 13th. Surrounded by her children she quietly passed away.
The funeral was held from her residence, 408 Mechanic St., Sunday after¬noon at 3 p.m. Her pastor Rev. Haugen, who visited her frequently during her illness, conducted services and preached from St. John 14, first seven verses. A comforting chapter to the departed one. She was laid to rest at the side of her dear ones in Montgomery cemetery.
