This community is called upon to mourn the death of a loved and honored longtime resident. Adolph Meyer, who passed away on Thursday morning, April 17th, 1902, after an illness of but a few days’ duration. On the evening of Saturday, the 12th, while about his work at the store, he was taken with a fainting spell. Sunday and Monday he was able to be about the house and expressed himself as expecting to be at work again soon, but this was not to be. Tuesday morning his symptoms became alarming, and he sank into unconsciousness, in which condition he remained until his death. Adolph Meyer was born in Zurich, Switzerland, on Aug. 22, 1851, and came to this country when but a young man 19 years of age. He made his home for several years with his brother Jacob Meyer, at that time living in Spillville. When A. Dostal and Jacob Meyer engaged in the dry goods business in Calmar in the year 1878 he became their salesman, and continued to fill such position after his brother had sold his interest in the business to A. Dostal, until but a few weeks ago, when he bought out his former employer. On the 15th of August, 1883, he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Miller, of Decorah six children were born to them,—three boys and three girls. With grief-stricken hearts his family mourn the untimely death of a loving and devoted husband, a kind and indulgent father. He was the youngest of three children, and has a mother and a sister in the far away fatherland who, even now weep for the darling son and brother gone on before. He has been a faithful and efficient member of the school board for a number of years, and was a charter member of the order of the Modern Woodmen of America. He was also a Yeoman.
The funeral took place Sunday, April 20th, at 2 o'clock p. m., at the M. E. church. Rev. S. C. Platts preaching the sermon. It was one of the largest gatherings of the kind in the history of the town, and was attended by the M. W. A. camps of Calmar, Spillville, Ossian and Fort Atkinson, which took charge of the services at the grave.
The bereaved family are assured of the deepest sympathy of every member of this community
