Betty Colleen Haltmeyer, 87, of Postville, Iowa died Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, Iowa. Betty Colleen, the daughter of Charley and Esther (Landmeyer) Engen, was born on December 28, 1931 in Decorah, Iowa. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1949. Betty was united in marriage with Eugene “Gene” Haltmeyer on December 2, 1950 in Decorah, Iowa. They met at the roller skating rink in Ossian, Iowa. Betty farmed alongside Gene for years, taking an active role in all aspects of the farm. She was a great cook and baker. The lunches she took to the field were legendary, even including ice cream. She made the best burgers ever. At gatherings, her family and friends talk about their favorite foods that she made. No one ever left the house hungry.

After Gene’s death, Betty was employed as a cook at the Food Ranch in Waukon and IGA in Postville. As a child when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she always said she wanted to be a grandma. And she was an amazing Grandma, not only to her grandkids but also to many other children.

Betty’s commitment to family and faith was strong. Betty was an active member of the Community Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon and Elder. She taught Sunday School and participated in Presbyterian Women. A member of the church for over fifty years, her church community was very important to her. She often made refreshments for fellowship. If you ever had a lunch at church, chances are she probably made some of it.

During Betty and Gene’s 34 years of marriage, they enjoyed card playing and other activities with friends and neighbors. The card games were always competitive, with loud joking, laughter, and heckling. Betty and Gene took fishing trips to Lake Pepin and made a trip to Gays Mills apple orchards each fall.

Betty attended all of her children’s sporting events. Her voice could always be heard above the crowd, cheering her children on. Betty moved to Sunrise Hill Care Center in August 2010. In her later years, she spent her time crocheting towels and necklaces, and she made the beaded cross that she wore every day. At the Care Center she loved the crafts and music. She attended services there every week.

Betty is survived by her children: Bev (Jeff) Sears of McFarland, Wisconsin; Sue Morrison of Traer, Iowa; and Ron (Jacquie) Haltmeyer of Swisher, Iowa; her grandchildren: Karen (Jon Marcot) Sears of Culver City, California; Missy (Brian) Burke of McFarland, Wisconsin; and Brian Morrison (Teresa McBride) of Traer, Iowa; Mike (Shellie) Morrison of Traer, Iowa: great grandchildren, Elisabeth and Will Marcot of Culver City, California; Michael and Grace Burke of McFarland, Wisconsin; Katie Morrison of Tiffin, Iowa; Scott and Tyler Morrison of Traer, Iowa; Chase, Larissa, and Jessica Morrison of Traer, Iowa: her sister, Helen Ramsey of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and her sisters-in-law, JoAnn Peake of Waukon, Iowa and Christine (Dennis) Soride of Postville, Iowa.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; her son, Wayne; her son-in-law, Max Morrison; her parents; and her brothers, Chuck, Hank, Lee, and Rich Engen; and brothers-in-law, Gary and Mark Haltmeyer and Kenneth Peake.
