Edward “Ed” Andersen, age 86, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, November 25, 2019, at Good Samaritan nursing home in Postville, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah in the spring.

Visitation will be after 10:00am at the funeral home on Saturday morning.

In Lieu of flowers the family would like memorials in Ed’s name to the Good Samaritan Society, 400 Hardin Dr., Postville, IA 52162

Edward Walter Andersen was born on October 8, 1933 the son of Nels Peter Andersen and Leona May (Lawrence) Andersen in Geneva, IL. He graduated from Calmar High School in 1951. Ed joined the Air Force in 1952 where he was part of the Air Police. He was stationed in North Africa and then El Paso, TX. Ed was honorably discharged in 1956. He married Cheryl Mae Digre, daughter of Arnold and Thelma (Ness) Digre on September 21, 1953 in New Jersey before being sent overseas. Ed joined the Decorah Police force on August 1, 1957. He became Assistant Chief in January of 1961 and was Chief of Police from 1966 to 1980. He was the owner/operator of Taco Bills Mexican Restaurant from 1985 until his retirement and move to Pocola, OK in 1990. During his retirement he worked in the security department of Rheem Industries in Fort Smith, AR. Ed returned to Decorah in 2011. He was Active in the Great Lights Masonic Lodge, the El Kahir Shriners, and a member of the VFW. He received his fifty-year pin from the Masonic Lodge in 2006. Ed and his wife Cheryl were members of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He enjoyed his family, camping, reading, going for drives and playing the slots.

Ed is survived by his children: Cheryl (Jim) Satterfield, Calmar, IA and Steven (Lori) Andersen, Apopka, FL. Grandchildren: Erin (Jason) Fletcher, St. Peters, MO; Sharon (Dr. Roger) Der, Porter Ranch, CA; Steven II (Diosa) Andersen, Chula Vista, CA. Great grandchildren: Ava Mae Fletcher; Kaila, Kyron and Kayleena Andersen; John and Nikolas Valadez.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Cheryl. Son: Brian. Parents: Nels and Leona (Lawrence) Andersen. Step-father: Alf Schneberger. Step-brother: Don (Louise) Schneberger. Father and mother-in-law: Arnold and Thelma Digre. Brother-in-law: Dave Digre.
