James P. McKinney Dead.
A telegram from Mendota, Ill., Monday, brought the intelligence that James P. McKinney had died in that city that day. In the absence of other information it is presumed that his death was due to heart failure as he had suffered somewhat at times from heart trouble. As all of the members of his family were absent from home we were unable to obtain the particulars of his life. A considerable part of his early life was spent in Ohio where he met and married Jane Amy, who with one daughter, Miss Mabel, survives him. One other child, a son, died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. McKinney came to Iowa in 1857 and for several years resided at Ft. Atkinson, where, according to Alexander’s history, they taught the second term of school held in that village, the school room being in one of the old fort buildings. The same authority says Mr. McKinney was the first notary in Washington township and that in 1860 he accompanied Nathaniel Otis to Pike’s Peak. He enlisted in the 27th Iowa and served during the war, and afterwards returned to Decorah which had then become the family home. Here he has continued to reside. For a number of years and until the election of President Cleveland, Mr. McKinney was a railway postal clerk on the St. Paul run, but since that time he has not been engaged in any active occupation. In his relations with his fellow men he sustained the esteem and respect due a good citizen from a wide circle of acquaintances. His death was a surprise to his friends because he left Decorah but a short time ago with the expectation of spending the winter in visits with old friends and acquaintances at various points and in the spring joining his wife and daughter in Cleveland.
The remains will be brought to Decorah today for interment.

Transcriber's Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Phelps Cemetery and was born in 1827.

Two Graves Added.
This year's Decoration Day saw two new wreaths placed on veterans' graves. These are those of Jas. P. McKinney and Byron Clark. The first named was one of the pioneer citizens; so was Mr. Clark but not of this vicinity. He lived up in Fremont township for a long period, belonged to the Cresco Post, but came here a little over two years ago.

Transcriber’s Note: Both are buried in Phelps Cemetery. Mr. McKinney was born in 1827 and died in 1903. Mr. Clark was born July 23, 1839 and died June 3, 1903.
