Obituary.
Harriet Stannard Morss, widow of the late J. G. Morss, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E M. Greene, last Thursday morning at 10:30 o’clock, after an illness of little more than a week.
Mrs. Morss was born in Durham. N. Y., Feb. 13, 1814, and was nearing her ninetieth birth. On Jan. 19, 1835, she was married to J. G. Morss and two years later they moved to Warren, Ohio. Until 1865 they resided in Warren and Lima, when they came to Decorah to make the home that has since known them, and where they grew to be loved and respected by a large circle of acquaintances. Because of health that for some years was not robust, it did not fall to Mrs. Morss’ part to participate actively in social and other affairs, but in her home she lived a beautiful complement to the courtly dignity that was a marked characteristic of her husband’s life. To them were born three children — Mrs. Greene, Edward B. Morss and Mrs. Helen Leavitt. Of these Mrs. Greene survives to cherish the memory of one who was indeed a mother. Judge Morss died several ago.
In her religious life Mrs. Morss was for many years a member of the Christian church, a faith to which she was constant to the end. Her last illness began only about ten days before her death, and was more the breaking down of old age than disease. As she herself expressed it, the machinery had worn out.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. M. Willett officiating, and the remains were interred by the side of other members of the family.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows her year of birth as 1815.
