S. W. HIATT.
Word comes to us this morning on the death of S. W. Hiatt, one of the old and highly respected residents of Hesper. His death occurred Tuesday evening shortly after supper, either from heart disease or apoplexy, and before his wife could call their nearest neighbor. We have no further particulars.Source: Decorah Republican Nov. 19, 1903 Page 6 Col 2, 3
On the evening of the 11th our community was startled as the report went over the wires that S. W Hiatt, after a busy day’s work and a hearty supper, was suddenly taken away while sitting in his easy chair reading by a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Hiatt was born in Westfield, Indiana, on Christmas day, 1834. On Aug. 11, 1853, he was married to Almira Hamline and in 1855 the young people came west and soon after coming here settled on a farm in Newberg twp., Minn. near the farm upon which Mr. Hiatt died. Mr. Hiatt has always been considered one of the substantial citizens of the community and was held in great respect by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his passing away the wife with whom he has passed fifty years of happy life, three sons and three daughters— C. A. and J. H. Hiatt of Hesper, Mrs. W. H. Johnson of Highland, S. W. Hiatt, Jr., of Hesper, N. D., Mrs. Etta Harkness and Miss Amy Hiatt, who are at home with mother. The funeral services were held in the Friends church, Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt having been lifelong members of that society, Rev. Scager, pastor of the M E. church at Mabel, giving the address. There was a large attendance at the funeral, showing in a slight way the respect in which Mr. Hiatt was held by those who had known him all these years. Among those present at the services were Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Odson of Springwater, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Griswold and Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Haines of Decorah.
