OBITUARY,
DEA. NORRIS MILLER.
Norris Miller was born Jan. 22, 1823, in Hudson, O., and died Jan 27, 1903. In 1847 he married Mary Stillwell, who survives him. In 1894{?} he went with the first rush to California, but returned to Ohio after an absence of two years. Iowa became their home in 1855. Here he lived a life of the strictest integrity and the highest character. His parents could afford him little of this world's goods, but they brought him up in a religious atmosphere so pure, true and natural that long before he professed a faith in Christ as his Master he was in spirit His follower. Thirty-five years ago he united with the Congregational church of this city. Prior to that he had become familiarly known as 'Squire Miller. Later there came to him the title of “Deacon” Miller, and he lived up to this office in the church to the fullest that his divine Father gave him light to see its duties. He had his share of the frailties of human nature, but he was so sincerely honest that those who knew him intimately loved him for the sturdy religious manhood which was his chief characteristic.
All his life he was a hard worker, and when old age grew upon him his mental faculties began breaking down. He was cared for at home until he had passed recollecting everydav surroundings, and it became clear that he needed such physical care as could only be secured in a hospital. On this account he was taken to Independence where the physical man followed the mental part, and he passed into rest on Tuesday last.
He was the father of three children. The eldest of these, a daughter, died in infancy. A second daughter, Ella, grew to womanhood in this community, married Dr. F M. Knight, and now sleeps in the home cemetery, leaving Lorin J. as the only direct descendant.
The funeral exercises will be held at the Congregational church this afternoon at 2 o’clock.
