OBITUARY.
Mary Johns was born near Polpero, Cornwall county, England, Jan. 4, 1839, and died at her home near Decorah, Iowa, Jan. 19, 1903, being 64 years and 15 days of age. She was the eighth of nine children, one having died in infancy, and the youngest sister, Mrs. Ann Johns, having died only last November. At the age of 12 she came with her father’s family, in 1851, to Rockford. Ill., where two brothers and a sister still reside.
She was married June 1st, 1861, to John Elwick, coming to the vicinity of Decorah, Iowa, in 1865, and in the autumn of 1868 they moved to the place which has since been their happy home. To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls, all of whom, with the husband, survive to mourn their great bereavement. She has been a faithful and affectionate wife and mother and will be sorely missed by her bereaved family.
Mrs. Elwick was brought up in a Christian home, and early in life united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she has been a faithful and consistent member.
Five weeks before her death she was stricken with paralysis, and though she rallied for a time she could not recover, and during the last days of her life she was surrounded in the home by her entire family, who anxiously hoped for the best.
Mother and wife of blessed memory has passed on, but while those who remain are in sadness, they do not sorrow as those who are without hope; separated for a short time, but hoping to meet again in that better laud where partings are no more.
The funeral was held this morning (Thursday) at the M. E. church.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in Phelps Cemetery.
