Robert Richard Szabo Sr., 94, of Castalia, Iowa died Friday. August 9, 2019 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. Robert Richard was born October 19, 1924 to Steve and Laura (Reisner) Szabo in Oelwein, Iowa. The family moved to Castalia when Robert was two years old. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in September of 1937. Robert graduated with top honors from Castalia High School in 1942. There were only two people in his class and Bob said the other guy was a half-wit. After graduation Robert joined the United States Marines and served from 1943 to 1945.
On a Thanksgiving weekend, Robert “borrowed” his father’s car and eloped with Mary Elizabeth Ferguson on November 26, 1945 in Kahoka, Missouri. Three children were born to this union. Robert was a self-employed milk hauler. He retired in 1986.
Robert was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was active in the church council, choir, Adult Sunday School and numerous other committees. He was on the Castalia Town Council for many years and Mayor from 1963 to 1967. Robert was a member of the Amvets in Monona and for seventy years Robert was a volunteer on the Castalia Fire Department. He was a charter member of Tri-City Golf Course and was on the Hall of Fame Board at Highway Lanes. Robert enjoyed gardening, playing cards and watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.
Robert is survived by his three children, Robert R. (Linda) Szabo, Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Barbara (Larry) Taylor of Stacyville, Iowa and Beverly (Jim Tangen) Tieskoetter of Clermont, Iowa; five grandchildren, Chad (Kathy) Szabo, Robert (Elizabeth Greene) Szabo III, Jeremy Kurth, Elise Linn (Phil) and Evan (Shana) Meyer; seven great-grandchildren, Zacharia, Josiah, Elias and Isabella Szabo, Aaron Lynn, and Caleb and Owen Meyer; brother, Victor Szabo of Castalia, Iowa; sister, Diane Buddenberg of Arcadia, Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law, Jean Szabo of Castalia and Fayne Szabo of Clarion, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 2002; parents, Steve and Laura Szabo; six brothers, Theodore, William (Betty), Edward, Eugene, Dale (Nadine) and Leon Szabo; and three sisters, Darlene (Laverne) Schultz, Agnes (Earl) Smith and Marilyn (Duane) Wander.
The family would like to thank Kris Meyer for the care she gave to Bob, allowing him to remain in his home. Also to the residents of Castalia for watching out for him.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Friday.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, August 16, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, Iowa with Rev. Jim Harbaugh as the officiant.
Burial will follow at Bloomfield Township Cemetery, Castalia, Iowa.
