DEATH OF C. P. BROWN
Event Occurred at St. Paul, on Friday, September 23d.
Intelligence came to R. F. B. Portman last Friday morning of the death of Charles P. Brown. The telegram gave no particulars but from articles in the St Paul papers we learn that it occurred on Friday morning last, and resulted from a stroke of appoplexy that came to him on the previous Tuesday night.
The better portion of Mr. Brown's years were spent in Decorah In during which time as a member of the firms of Morse & Brown, Brown & Wellington and Brown & Portman he occupied a commanding influence when the old bar of Winneshiek county was at its best, with Judge Willett, Levi Bullis M. V. Burdick and John T. Clark as its leading spirits. He came to Decorah from Cedar Falls, in 1869 and removed to St. Paul in 1887
While here he was an active democrat, but never an aspirant for position. Following is the obituary published in St Paul papers. We quote from the Dispatch:
Mr. Brown was born in Lynn, Mass., 71 years ago. He was the son of Dr. W. B. Brown, a brother of Gould Brown, the grammarian. He spent four years at the Quaker school in Providence and returned to Lynn, where he learned the shoemaker's trade. In 1857 he went to Buffalo. N. Y., where he undertook the study of law, with Eli Cook as preceptor. In 1861 he was admitted to the bar and practiced at Bellevue, Mich., Cedar Falls and Decorah, Iowa, and seventeen years ago came to St. Paul. He had not been actively engaged in business for the past two years on account of failing health.
Mr. Brown is survived by his widow, who was Miss Vera Brackett, daughter of M. S. Brackett, to whom he was married in 1861, and one son, Martin W. Brown, of Galveston, Texas. George Brown, of Lynn., Mass., is the only other known relative living.
In personal disposition Mr. Brown was genial and companionable, and enjoyed a wide acquaintance and friendship during his residence in Decorah.
