Lois Knowles was born in Quebec Canada, May 5, 1829 and died in Hesper, Iowa, July 23. 1904. In early womanhood she was married to James R Battey, who died Sept 1. 1859, in Hesper, leaving his young wife and two daughters, now Mrs. Loisanna Buchanan, of Newberg. Oregon, and Mrs. Susie Talbert of Hesper. On Feb. 3, 1860. Mrs. Battey was united in marriage with C. W. Rowe, who, with a son H. C Howe, and the daughters mentioned survive her. A daughter, Hattie, died in infancy. Mrs. Rowe was a life-long member of the Friends church, and her last sickness of about two months’ duration was borne with patience and resignation, because she was ready and willing to go and be at rest. The funeral service was held on the 25th at the Friends church. Rev. H. F. Dorcas officiating. Mrs. Rowe’s residence of fifty years in this community has endeared her to a large circle of friends who now extend sympathy to the bereaved family.
