Andrew Bakken was born near Christiania, Norway, Feb. 16, 1830. His boyhood days and young manhood were spent in the old country. In 1854 he emigrated to America, coming directly to Winneshiek county where he has since made his home. On Oct. 27, 1858, he was married to Bertha Hanson Enga at Decorah. This union was blessed by ten children, of whom three have been called home. One, a son, Olaves, lived to be almost twenty-two years of age, the other two, Albert and Emma, died when very young. He leaves a loving wife, seven children and fifteen grandchildren to mourn his loss besides a host of friends who will miss the kindly face of Grandpa Bakken from our community. For five years their home has been in town. Since moving here he has endeared himself to all who have known him, and even the children will miss him for he always had a kind word for each and every one. Grandpa Bakken had been growing feeble all winter but for the last seven weeks he had taken to his bed and all that loving care could do for him was done, but to no avail, until on Friday morning, June 14th,{sic} the tired spirit was called home. He was a member of the Madison church, the funeral services being held there Sunday afternoon, Rev. Xavier officiating. He was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery adjoining the church. The children who survive him are Henry Bakken of South Dakota, Mrs. Emma Olson of Decorah, Gus, Ed., Marin, Albert and Mrs. Hilda Magnus of Ridgeway.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a grave shows his name as Andreas and that he is buried in Madison Lutheran Cemetery; however it shows that he died June 17 which agrees with the fact that it was a Friday, as stated above.
