OBITUARY.
Mrs. Jane Smith, wife of Dr. A. C. Smith, died last Thursday afternoon after a painful illness from malignant tumor Mrs. Smith was born in Valders, Norway, in 1849, and came to America with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jens Christopher, when three or four years old. As their home was made almost immediately in Winneshiek county she was one of the pioneer band who came here in the early fifties. Commencing at the age of fourteen or fifteen, she taught school for a number of years. In 1878 she was married to Dr. Smith. To them four children were born, two of whom survive. They arc Dr. Carston C. Smith and Miss Anna Smith. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the First Lutheran Church and the remains were interred in the Norwegian cemetery. In their bereavement the family have the sympathy of a widely extended circle of friends. Mrs. Smith was an earnest Christian woman, devoted to her family and her home, and ever solicitous of the welfare of those about her.
