Joseph Walender, Sr., died yesterday at his home after a week’s illness.
Joseph Walender was born in Bohemia, Feb. 6, 1823. In 1853 he emigrated to America and settled in Manitowoc county, Wis., in 1856. He then went to Kewaunee county, Wis., in 1856, and to Kewaunee in 1859. West Liberty, Iowa, to which he came in 1885 was his next home. In the fall of 1859 he brought his family to Calmar where he and his son were engaged in the drag business. In 1893 he retired, thus passing from an active life as general merchant, real estate agent, banker, and druggist. In 1855 he was married to Catherine Bursch, to which union were born four daughters and one son, all of whom survive him. These are Mrs. Marie Bouska of Bridgeport, Wash., Mrs. Elizabeth Patnaude of Manitowoc, Win., Mrs. Pauline Scollard, of Milwaukee, Mrs. Augusta Henderson of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Dr. Jos. Welender, Jr., of Wenatchee, Wash, In their sorrow Mrs. Walender and family have the deepest sympathy of the community.Transcriber's Note: Calmar City Cemetery shows he is buried there.
