Word was received in Calmar last week of the death of Mrs. Mariette Ferguson on Thursday at Sioux City. The remains were brought to Calmar for burial. The services were hold Saturday morning from the M. E. church. Mrs. Ferguson was a resident of Calmar for nearly twenty-five years, and during most of that time she was owner of the Ferguson House. For the past two or three years she has been living with her daughter in Sioux City. The relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Carrick of Sioux City. Mrs. Stiles of Postville and Mr. and Mrs. Lennie Ferguson of McGregor.

Transcriber’s Note: Calmar City Cemetery records show her name spelled Mary Ett and that she was born September 12, 1828 and died January 14, 1904 and her gravestone shows she was born in 1828.

Mary Etta Van Hooser was born Sept. 12, 1826,{?} in Jefferson county, New Jersey Feb. 21, 1855, was united in marriage to John Ferguson. In the year 1863 they came to Iowa and located near Postville, coming to Cmalar{sic} in 1877, becoming owners of the hotel so long known as the Ferguson house. The husband died Jan. 12, 1880, and for many years Mrs. Ferguson remained here as owner and manager of the hotel. In March 1902 she accompanied her daughter, Mrs.. D. E. Carrick, to Sioux City where she has since resided until the angel of death called her.
When but a young girl she united with the M E. Church, was an active worker in the faith, and was a member of the church at Calmar at the time of her death
Mrs. M. E. Ferguson departed from this life to the unknown beyond on Jan. 14,1904, at her daughter’s home in Sioux City, and was laid in her final resting place in the Calmar cemetery beside her husband, the funeral being from the M. E. church, Rev. Leamon officiating, Saturday, Jan. 16, 1904, at eleven o’clock a. m.
