Obituary.
Linus Curtis was born Feb. 27, 1833, at Highbridge, Conn., the son of Henry and Diantha Curtis. He was of a family of six children, five sons and a daughter and was the last of the family to pass to the Great Beyond.
At the age of nineteen he started out to make his fortune in the west. He stayed in Ohio for about a year and then started farther west, arriving at Bluffton in Winneshiek county, in the summer of 1853. Lyman Morse was at this time building the first mill at Bluffton, and Mr. Curtis went to work to help cut and haul the logs to build the mill and dam. Mr. Curtis took up a quarter section just across the river east from Bluffton and stayed until the fall of 1859, when he sold out and returned to his former home in Connecticut.
December 11, 1861, at Pound Ridge, Conn., he was married to Mary Jane Fancher, and to them one child, a daughter, was born which passed away in infancy.
In the spring of 1862, he moved to New York city and was a member of the police force for six years. After leaving this occupation, he engaged in truck farming for about thirty years, selling out in 1901 and coming west again taking up his residence near Kendallville where he resided at the time of his death, Dec. 17. 1908.
His funeral was held on Dec. 19th, Rev. Young of Ridgeway officiating with interment in the Eddy cemetery.
