GRIPMAN - At his residence in Canoe township, May 18th, 1894, Silas Gripman, aged 80 years, 5 months, and 5 days.
Silas Gripman was born in Jefferson Co., N.Y., Dec 13th. 1813. When a young man, he moved with his father's family to Michigan where he was married to Martha Gorton, a widow with three children. In the spring of 1855 he moved with his family to Winneshiek Co., Iowa where he spent the remainder of his life. His loved companion departed this life nearly eighteen years ago. He was the father of seven children, six of whom survive and were all privileged to be present and together mourn the loss of a loving father. The three step children also survive him but could not be present at the funeral. The services were held at the house and his remains were taken to Hesper and buried by the side of his loved companion. He was a lifelong and consistent member of Friends church. He was often heard repeating comforting passages of Scripture and left evidence of his peace having been made with God.
