Carl Hjelmeland age 73, of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago Street in Decorah with Rev. Allen Vik presiding. Burial will be in the Springwater Cemetery north of Decorah.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah and also after 10:00am at the church on Thursday morning.

Carl Dean Hjelmeland was born on February 3, 1946 the son of Robert and Edith (Erickson) Hjelmeland in Decorah, IA. Carl was baptized and confirmed at Decorah Lutheran Church. He attended Springwater Country School and graduated from Decorah High School in 1964. After high school, Carl worked as a mechanic for Erickson Texaco. On April 16, 1966, Carl married Linda Engen at the Madison Lutheran Church. Together they have two daughters: Ann Marie and Jennifer Lynn. Carl went to work for Luther College as an electrician where he worked for thirty years before retiring. Carl joined the Decorah Fire Department in November of 1978. He was the first assistant in 1980, training officer in 1981, Fire Chief from 1982-84, 86-87 and 88-90. Carl retired from the Fire Department in 1991. Carl raced stock cars before his marriage to Linda. He also enjoyed taking trips with his family, camping, golfing and visiting lighthouses. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Nascar fan always rooting for Bill Elliot. He enjoyed seeing his dog Trixie and his grand dog Cooper and also enjoyed seeing and spending time with Ann and Don's dogs Shadow, Gunner, and Lucky who are in heaven. Carl loved spending time with all of his family.

Carl is survived by his wife Linda of Decorah. Daughters: Ann (Don) Neuzil, Waukon, IA and Jennifer Hjelmeland, Decorah, IA. Grandchildren: Jamie Holzer, Amie (friend, Wyatt Anderson) Holzer, Tamie Holzer and Shawn Holzer. Great granddaughter: Raylee Rose Anderson. Brothers: Harold Hjelmeland, Kokomo, IN, Lester (Arla) Hjelmeland, Winona, MN and Norman (Patricia) Hjelmeland, Urbandale, IA. Brothers-in-law: Gerald (Lorna) Engen, Andover, MN and Vincent (Carolyn) Engen, Aurora, IL. Sister-in-law: Sharon (Dale) Roher, Decorah, IA along with many nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents: Robert and Edith (Erickson) Hjelmeland. Half-brother at birth: David. Nephew: Daryl Hjelmeland. Grandniece: Sydney Hjelmeland. Father and mother-in-law: Truman and Gladys (Vick) Engen. Brother-in-law: David Engen. Sisters-in-law: Judy Engen and Linda Hjelmeland.
