Another of the Pioneers Passes to His Long Home.
After an illness which has covered nearly a dozen years, but only during the past six months of which was he entirely confined to the house, Amos Judson McKay died Monday morning about 6:30 at the home of his son-in-law, Lewis Holcomb, The immediate cause of his death was dropsy, following a stroke of appoplexy{sic} sustained about two months ago.
Mr. McKay was born August 10th, 1817, at Waterford, Erie county, Pa. On January 1st, 1840, he was married to Elizabeth Jodon, a union which was blessed by four children, all living. These are Albert M. McKay of Davenport, Wash., Mrs. Lewis Holcomb of Decorah, Mrs. Eugene Tubbs of Flora Home, Florida, and Mrs. Lessie L. West of Superior, Wis. His wife died Nov. 22, 1899. In the fall of 1856 the west attracted Mr. McKay and he brought his family to Freeport where they resided four years, then moving to Decorah. In 1862 the deceased enlisted in the 6th Iowa cavalry and served three years under the late Capt. T. W. Burdick in the Dakotas. At the age of sixteen Mr. McKay was converted and united with the Methodist church, an affiliation which he maintained until his death.
Although his recovery was beyond hope and it was known that he had not long to live, death came to this pioneer unexpectedly. Sunday he had been brighter than for some time, conversed freely with members of the family and enjoyed a visit from his pastor. He rested well during the night and at four o’clock Monday morning when C. L. Holcomb (who set up with him) left, he gave promise of enjoying another good day. Little did anyone suspect the end was so near.
The funeral will be held at one o’clock this afternoon, at the house, Rev. Hunt officiating, and the comrades of the G. A. R. will conduct the services at the grave.
