Mr. Charles Golz, who died Monday, was one of the few in business in the spring of 1860, when the life of this REPUBLICAN began. At that time he was a thriving cabinet maker and furniture dealer. The undertaking business which grew upon him in after years was of trifling importance at that time. All were young, hale, hearty, and looked forward to long years of life. Fred Siihring and Geo. Brunner were journeymen cabinet makers in his employ at that time.

THE PASSING OF OLD RESIDENTS.
CHARLES GOLZ.
Chas. Golz, the pioneer furniture dealer and undertaker of Decorah, died Monday evening from the effect of a fall late Saturday afternoon in which a bad scalp wound was followed by unconsciousness lasting from midnight Saturday until he ceased to breathe. He was moving into rooms over Mackenstadt’s tailor shop and whether he lost his balance and fell while carrying some boards up stairs or was overcome by vertigo is not known. He fell backward out of the hallway and struck his head on the sidewalk, inflicting a bad three-cornered cut. John McAndrews, Jr., saw him fall and assisted him up stairs, medical aid was summoned and every care possible given him. He retained consciousness for a few hours, giving directions about some of his personal affairs, and then a short period of delirium preceded the unconsciousness in which he died.
Mr. Golz was born in Prussian, and the name which he was entitled to bear was Charles von der Goltz, denoting that he was of gentle berth; but when he came to America he dropped the titles of his name and spelled his name Golz, thus endeavoring to signify that he had adopted his new land in every sense. The date of his birth was Nov. 23, 1823, and his age was 81 years, 3 months and 25 days. He was married in Germany in 1847 to Caroline Noake and came to America in 1853, settling at Davenport where he followed his trade as a cabinet maker and dealer in furniture. Four years later he came to Decorah to reside and here he was remained since.
Mr. Golz is survived by four children—Mrs. Joseph Morton of Calmar, Miss Ida and Frank Golz of Decorah and Albert of Minneapolis. His wife and his oldest son, Ernest, died several years ago.
Deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the funeral service was conducted by the order yesterday, at Grace Episcopal church, Rev. Wellington McVettie officiating. His long residence here and his public service as an undertaker gave Mr. Golz a wide acquaintance with the people of the community, who will be shocked to learn of his death But a few hours before the accident which terminated his life, he was “in the harness,” in attendance upon the body of Wm. Meyrick, brought here from Independence for burial.
