Our Burr Oak correspondent furnished us a more than usually interesting newsy letter this week. It concluded with the obituary of Henry{sic} Sharp, one of the pioneer settlers in Burr Oak, who had been active in all its affairs for nearly half a century. {The obituary was for James Sharp}

The funeral of James Sharp was attended at the M. E. church in Burr Oak on Thursday be a great many of his friends and neighbors, who have known him for many years. Mr. Sharp was one {of} the pioneer settlers of this vicinity, and with the help of Henry Sherwin, another old settler, long since dead, broke the sod for our village cemetery and dug the grave for the first burial. This was done during the 50’s. Mr. Sharp has been rather feeble for some time, but his last sickness was of short duration. He was born in Pocahontas county, Virginia, Sept. 28, 1819. Married Rached{sic} Moore Feb. 24, 1842. Their married life has been protracted beyond the average, which lacked only a month of 63 years. They moved to Iowa in 1853 and settled just across the line in Hesper township, and early in 1861 they took possession of the farm where they have since lived. He was an industrious, obliging neighbor, of temperate habits. There are seven of their ten children still living, five of whom were in attendance at the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sharp, the son and wife with whom they lived, have been very kind to them, and they haven’t lacked for care or attention.
