Sumner, Iowa Aug. 11.—Late this afternoon there was laid to rest in the cemetery at this place a man who was worthy of more than a passing notice, being one of the twenty men who on May 29th, 1854, met in a room in Philadelphia, Pa., and organized the Republican party. His name was Elfred Preston and he was nearly 75 years old. He was a resident of Sumner for many years but for over two years has been a resident of Oelwein, where he died and where two of his children reside. Mr. Preston was the last surviving member of the illustrious twenty that brought into existence a mighty political organization, the greatest this country has ever known.
