Darlene M. Schultz, 83, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 11th, at 11:00 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Pastor Kim Gates officiating. Burial will be at Frankville Cemetery, Frankville, IA. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Memorials can be made to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

Darlene Mae Schultz was born on September 2, 1935 in Postville, IA, the daughter of Otto Elmer and Elsie (Linderbaum) Hughes. She was baptized at Frankville Community Presbyterian Church, attended rural Frankville elementary school, and graduated from Postville High School in 1954. On June 27, 1954 she married Byron LeRoy Schultz at the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church where they reaffirmed their vows on their 50th anniversary. Darlene farmed alongside Byron for 30 years taking an active role in all aspects of the farm. She took accounting classes at NICC in Calmar, IA, during the 1980s to be able to help with the bookkeeping. Darlene was employed at the Red Owl (which later became Quillins) grocery store in Waukon for 26 years, starting in the restaurant then moving to the deli department until eventually managing the bakery there. After moving to Waukon, she enjoyed working at the election polls.

Darlene was an active member of Community Presbyterian Church in Frankville where she participated in ladies aid and was a former Deacon. Recently she and Byron had become members of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Darlene was active in the Winneshiek County CowBelles and the Rivers and Bluffs Tractor Club, enjoying many rides through the area. She raised a large garden both on the farm and after moving to Waukon and she will be missed for her love of canning as well as making jams and baked goods. She also enjoyed teaching ceramic classes from her home. During Darlene and Byron’s 65 years of marriage they enjoyed neighborhood cookouts, card playing, Pinochle clubs, and Branson bus trips. They traveled across the country from Maine to California to Alaska in their motor home as well as taking fishing trips to Lake Pepin and in retiring years spent time in the Gulf Shores of Alabama with their two cats “Pudy” and “Mitzy”. Darlene was the biggest cheerleader to all her grandkids during their sporting and school events and her love for all her family will be cherished forever.

Survivors include her husband Byron of Waukon; her children: Kent (Donna) of Frankville, Randy (Jayne) and Chris (Robin) both of Decorah, Kimberly (Chuck) Deering of Postville, and Shannon (Lisa) of Teutopolis, IL; her grandchildren: Bobby Schultz, Jessica (Brody Wells) Schultz, Mitchell (Christina) Schultz, Logan Schultz, Katie (Travis) Schnur, Brett Schultz, BreAnn (Mitchel) Hemesath, Kelsie (Heath) Dee, Tanner Deering, Whitney (Dalton Crawford) Deering, Morgan (Brandon Johnson) Deering, Chase Schultz, Marshall Schultz, Zack Schultz, and Rourke Schultz; her great-grandchildren: Peyton, Kyzer, Aiden, Mason, Audrey, and Wyatt; brothers and sisters-in-law: Jack & Patricia Schultz, Pat Schultz Cline, Stan Lindquist, and Rochelle & Noel Cook. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Evart (Lilah) Hughes and brothers and sisters-in-law Cloy Jr (Lorraine) Schultz, Grant Schultz, and Carole Lindquist.
