Who Rose Scott Was.
Our item of last week, concerning the murder in California of “Rose Scott of Ossian, Iowa” has brought several replies. The fullest information comes from M. J. Carter, who says the woman was a daughter by a second marriage of Edward Scott, now dead, formerly of Ossian. Scott ran a blacksmith shop at Moneek in the early days of that town, later in Decorah; then moved on a farm southwest of Castalia, prospered and died possessed of 240 acres. He moved to Ossian after his second marriage. His widow and children moved to California about nine years ago, and there Rose, the oldest, was married to a grandson of Moses Hostetler, formerly of Frankville. Rose was not over fifteen years of age at the time of the marriage. No trouble existed in this relation until recently when it is said the desire by Rose for the attention of other men led to a divorce. Even before the family removed to California, she gave evidence of becoming a beautiful woman. Mrs. Scott was a daughter of one Wm. McClain, and her uncle John McClain is now domiciled at Freeport. Mr. Scott was in the words of Mr. Carter “one of the substantial, thoroughly honest, well-to-do Irishman, having the respect of all.”
